Contrary to what some people believe, none of the following activities has been shown to be effective in reducing the blood alcohol level or avoiding a penalty: exercising, chewing gum or sweets, drinking or chewing coffee, drinking oil, smoking, using cocaine, using certain mouth sprays, drinking a lot of water, or consuming egg whites.
The maximum permitted blood alcohol levels are:
- Professional drivers and novice drivers (first 2 years of their licence): 0.15 milligrams per litre of exhaled air or 0.30 grams per litre of blood.
- All other drivers (including cyclists and personal mobility vehicle users): 0.25 milligrams per litre of exhaled air or 0.50 grams per litre of blood.
IMPORTANT: even if you drive with a level below the maximum, it is already possible to have an accident due to the effects of alcohol (the only safe level is 0.0 g/l).
