What should we do in the event of a brake failure?

If we detect that the brake system is not working we should first pump the brake pedal, then use engine braking (stop accelerating and downshift to lower gears) so that the speed gradually decreases. We can also apply the parking brake but smoothly and progressively, never abruptly, or try to scrape the side of the vehicle against an embankment or ditch, never against a rigid object.
