Deep in "Additional Lane"
According to Spanish traffic law, dipped headlights (luces de corto alcance o de cruce) are compulsory both during the day and at night for two specific groups of vehicles when an opposite-direction lane is active:
The vehicles driving inside the extra lane (carril habilitado en sentido contrario al habitual).
The vehicles driving in the normal lane(s) immediately adjacent to that extra lane (carril o carriles contiguos).
Vehicles driving in standard lanes that are not adjacent to the temporary lane (e.g., if there are multiple normal lanes and they are in the far right lane) are not required by this rule to turn on their headlights during the day, though it is always recommended.
The Law in the BOE (Boletín Oficial del Estado)
This specific regulation is governed by the Reglamento General de Circulación (approved by Real Decreto 1428/2003), which is the official text published in the BOE.
The two crucial articles that specify this rule are Article 41 (which outlines the rules for these specific lanes) and Article 104 (which governs the usage of lighting systems).
Here is the breakdown of the official text:
1. Article 41.1 (Rules for using the lane)
"Los usuarios de este tipo de carriles circularán siempre, al menos, con la luz de corto alcance o de cruce encendida, tanto de día como de noche..."
Translation: "Users of this type of lanes will always drive, at least, with the short-range or dipped headlight turned on, both day and night..."
2. Article 41.1 (Rules for the adjacent lanes)
Further down in the exact same paragraph, the law extends this obligation to the normal traffic lanes right next to it:
"Los conductores de los vehículos que circulen por carriles destinados al sentido normal de circulación, contiguos al habilitado para circulación en sentido contrario al habitual, tampoco podrán desplazarse lateralmente [...] llevarán encendida la luz de corto alcance o cruce, al menos, tanto de día como de noche..."
Translation: "Drivers of vehicles driving in lanes intended for the normal direction of traffic, adjacent to the one enabled for traffic in the opposite direction to the usual, [...] will have the short-range or dipped headlight turned on, at least, both day and night..."
3. Article 104 (General Lighting Requirements)
This is cross-referenced in Article 104.1.c, which reinforces exactly who must use lighting during the day:
"Se deberá llevar encendido el alumbrado que corresponda [...] También se obligará a llevarlo encendido, tanto de día como de noche, a los vehículos que circulen por un carril reversible o en sentido contrario al normalmente utilizado en la calzada donde se encuentre situado, bien sea un carril que les esté exclusivamente reservado o bien abierto excepcionalmente a la circulación en dicho sentido, así como a los que lo hagan por los carriles contiguos a estos últimos."
Key Rules to Remember for DGT Exams:
If you are preparing for a theoretical test, these extra lanes come with a package of strict rules that apply differently depending on where you are driving:
Vehicle Limitations: Only motorcycles and passenger cars without trailers (turismos sin remolque) are allowed to enter the opposite-direction lane when it is enabled for traffic flow reasons. If it is enabled due to road works, all vehicles can use it unless explicitly prohibited by signs.
Speed Limits:
Inside the temporary lane: Maximum 80 km/h, minimum 60 km/h.
In the adjacent normal lane: If there is only one normal lane left for that direction, they must also follow the 80/60 km/h limit. If there are multiple normal lanes, they can maintain the standard speed limit of the road.
No Overtaking: You cannot cross the cone line or change lanes once you enter this zone.
